Psychoneuroimmunology is the branch of biomedical science that explores the relationships between the nervous system, emotions, and the endocrine and immune systems. It is the science of the mind/body connection and it is concerned with the links between our states of mind and our states of health. It is one piece of a very complex puzzle - the puzzle of what creates and maintains health and well-being. In this teleconference, Dr. Joie Power will present an easy to understand explanation of the operation of the mind/body connection through the hypothalamic/adrenocortical axis (HPA axis) and will discuss the host of chronic health problems that arise from continuing over-activation of this system. Finally, she will explore the ways in which aromatherapy can impact well-being through modulation of the processes that occur in the HPA axis when it is activated by stress.
“Because inhaled aromas give direct access to the brain’s limbic system, including the hypothalamus, they have great potential to modulate the stress response and calm an over-active HPA axis; this is where aromatherapists can, in some cases, revitalize those with chronic health problems and, ultimately, even save lives.” Joie Power, Ph.D.
